Below is a general schedule for the semester.  Major plans are given, as are major dates, but the schedule is skeletal rather than exhaustive.  Please understand that not all of the due dates are listed below, nor are all class plans.  I do reserve the right to alter the schedule if/as needed.

 

SHORT STORIES:

 

Week 1(Feb 2/4): 

Intro to class; Syllabus; Diagnostic Essay

 

Week 2 (Feb 9/11):

Theme; Plot; Conflict; Tragic Flaw; Foreshadowing; Irony; Developing ¶s of literary analysis 

Thurs, Feb 12:  Last day to drop a semester-length course (refund; no “W”)

 

Week 3 (Feb 16/18):

Mon, Feb 16:  Presidents’ Day Holiday 

Literary Analysis/Criticism:  What it is and how to get it; Literary Criticism Responses

*Class will meet in a smart classroom this week!

Fri, Feb 20:  Last day to drop a semester-length course (no refund; “W”)

 

Week 4 (Feb 23/25):

Character; Protagonist/Antagonist; Writing about literature in the present tense

Short Story Analysis Paper Assigned

 

Week 5 (Mar 2/4):

Setting, Symbolism and Point of View; Short Story Analysis Sources and Outline Due

Mon, Mar 2:  Last day to file for Associates’ degrees (AA) and certificates

 

Week 6 (Mar 9/11):

Short Story Analysis Draft Due; Exam 1:  Short Stories 

 


 

POETRY:

 

Week 7 (Mar 16/18):

Short Story Analysis Final Draft Due; Introduction to Poetry; Poetic Form

 

Week 8 (Mar 23/25):

Rhyme and Alliteration

 

Week 9 (Mar 30—April 1):  SPRING BREAK!

 

Week 10 (April 6/8):

Tone, Denotation and Connotation; Poetry Analysis Paper Assigned

 

Week 11 (April 13/15):

Diction and Syntax; Poetry Analysis Sources and Outline Due

 

Week 12 (April 20/22):

Figurative Language; Poetry Analysis Draft Due

 

Week 13 (April 27/29):

Figurative Language Continued; Poetry Analysis Final Draft Due; Research Paper Assigned; Exam Two:  Poetry

Fri, May 1:  Last day to withdraw from a semester-length course (“W”) 

 

DRAMA:

 

Week 14 (May 4/6):

Intro to Drama; Oedipus Rex; Research Paper Topic and Sources Due

 

Week 15 (May 11/13):

Death of a Salesman; Research Paper Outline Due 

 

Week 16 (May 18/20):

Research Paper Draft Due 

 

Week 17 (May 27th): 

Weds, May 27, 12:40-2:40p:  Final Exam!

Research Paper Final Draft Due
