Format for Essay Exams:

 

I.  Intro:

        A.  Attention–Getter

B.  Identify the proverb and explain what it means. 

        *Be objective: No opinion; simply explain the proverb

        C.  Give a brief example of the proverb (Not agreeing or      disagreeing; just showing you understand what it means).

        D.  Thesis:  Strong statement re: the truth of the proverb

(Direct to a particular audience; make clear which circumstance this is really true/untrue in; clearly state think, know, do)

 

*You may develop several examples or one example with several points.  Each example/point should fit your audience/purpose.  

 

II.  Body 

A.  Main Points 1–3:  Identify point and tie it back to thesis using topic sentence

                1.  Develop main point with specific examples.

 

III.  Conclusion:  Leave the reader thinking.  Don’t bring up points you could have developed in your body.
