Extra Credit in English 1B
The following
project is worth 50 homework points. You
may only submit one extra credit project. (This does not include
THE
ASSIGNMENT: Attend a LITERARY event: Poetry reading, poetry slam, or play (must be
a dramatization of something that was written as a play to begin with, not
adapted into one). It must be a live
event. Then, write a 500+ word
summary/response. Attach proof of attendance to your summary/response: A flier, a ticket, etc. Proofread your response carefully.
Instructions
for each part of the assignment are below:
Summary of the event:
Write an objective (no
opinion) summary of what you saw and heard:
1. Observations in terms of the elements of
literature:
*Poetry: Rhyme (perfect; slant; eye; internal), endstopping,
enjambment, alliteration, tone, connotation, diction, syntax, simile, metaphor…
*Plays: theme, plot, setting,
characterization, tragic flaw, irony, symbolism, point of view…
2. Content:
Themes, messages, meanings
3. Style:
Anything interesting that is not covered by the above 2
Response to the event:
Write a subjective (opinionated)
response about your experience:
1. How did the event enhance your
experience/understanding of this class?
2. What is your personal opinion about the
experience?
v To find events, try the Metro, the
Mercury News, the Wave, or other Bay Area directories.
*Suggestion: Call before
you attend the event to make sure it is still happening!
v Please bring in any information you know
about any other literary events happening around the Bay Area. This will create more options for
everybody.
v Please invite other students, carpool,
pay for parking, be a designated driver, etc.
v Take something with you to record your
observations: small pad and pen; video
camera; cell; etc. (Beware: Some establishments frown upon/forbid
recording.)
Please type
your response and format it according to MLA Documentation guidelines.
This response
is worth a possible 50 points. The
points will be split into two categories:
content and accuracy. Each
category will be worth 25 points. These
will then be added up to equal your total.
For content, points will be awarded based on depth and breadth of
development. For accuracy, points will
be awarded based on the four-error-per-page rule.
