Fragments

Fragment:  Not a complete sentence but is punctuated like one:

*Complete sentence:  Subject, Verb, complete thought

Common Fragment Types:

·       No subject in main clause:  Running quickly, ducked into an alley.

He grabbed her wallet.  Ducked into an alley.

She cut two hours off her drive.  Took a short–cut.

·       No verb in main clause:

That is my husband.  The guy wearing the blue t–shirt.

My car needs an oil change.  The one next to the SUV.

·       No subject or verb (Phrase):

We moved her car while she was in the movie.  Just as a joke.

I really like her friends.  Especially Mona.

·       Dependent clause only (No main clause):

I couldn’t go to Europe.  Because I had too many bills.

Hiking there is risky.  Especially when the trail is muddy.

To fix:

·       Join it with a sentence (IC) that has a subject and verb

·       Revise the sentence: add missing subject, verb, or both

·       Change dependent clauses to independent clauses
