Kinds of Sentences

Simple Sentence:

·       One independent clause

·       No dependent clauses

·       May contain phrases

·       May have more than one subject or verb

Ex: The man and his daughter were upset. 

 

Compound Sentence:

·       Two or more independent clauses

·       No dependent clauses 

·       Join with “, and a FANBOY” or “;”

*Coordinating Conjunctions: for and nor but or yet so

Ex: The man and his daughter were upset, but the lady was frightened.  The man was upset; the lady was frightened.

 

Complex Sentence:

·       One independent clause

·       One or more dependent clauses

*Use a comma after a dep. clause that appears before the main clause.

Ex: Because the girl was ill, she stayed home from school.

*A relative clause can be the dependent clause in a complex sentence.

Ex: The school that she attended had a very strict absence policy.

 

Compound/complex Sentence:

·       Two or more independent clauses

·       One or more dependent clauses

Ex: Because she stayed home from school, she didn’t get the homework, so her friend brought it to her.
