Phrase: 

·       Group of words that go together. 

·       NO SUBJECT!  NO VERB!! 

Example: “down the hill”

 

Kinds of Phrases:  Three major types:

 

1.  Prepositional:  starts with a preposition

Ex:  out the door; under the fridge; into the mist

 

2.  Verbal:  Starts with a “Verbal” (infinitive; participle; gerund)

 

There are three kinds of verbal phrases: 

·       Infinitive Phrase: starts with an infinitive

Ex:  to run faster; to take a bath

 

·       Participial Phrase: starts with a participle (ends in ed or ing)

Ex: Sliced in half, the rotten innards of the apple were revealed; Driving away, she hit the curb.

 

·       Gerund Phrase:  starts with a gerund (verb ending in –ing that functions as a noun in a sentence)

Example: The boy likes taking medicine; I hate running in the rain.

 

3.  Appositive: explains, restates, or adds new information about a noun

Ex:  Shirley Manson, the lead singer of Garbage, has red hair.
