Plot: 

Sequence of events in the story & their relation to one another

 

Not only what happens but why:  In “Salvation,” characters’ decisions/reactions shape plot; plot reveals human nature.

*Aunt exaggerates; Langston waits; Langston lies due to pressure.

 

Elements of Plot:

·       Exposition:  Background; set up of the conflict (info. you need to understand and appreciate the conflict)

Example (Using Willy Wonka, part one):  Charlie is poor. 

          a. End Orientation:  The outcome is hinted at in the intro.

b. Foreshadowing:  Hints at the outcome; may not be in intro. 

·       Inciting Incident:  Introduces the conflict

Example:  Willy Wonka announces the contest.

·       Rising Action:  Events that build towards the climax

Example:  Children begin finding tickets; Charlie gets two bars, but neither has the golden ticket.

·       *Turning Point:  A plot twist, leading to further complications

Charlie finds money.

·       Further Rising Action

Example:  Charlie buys two bars.  He devours one in the store.

·       Climax:  The emotional high point of the story

Example:  Ticket!

·       Falling Action:  Events wind down

Example:  Charlie is approached by people but runs home

and tells his family about the ticket.

·       Denouement/Resolution:  Resolves the conflict to a greater or less degree; may introduce a surprise ending

Example:  Charlie and Grandpa Joe are going to the

chocolate factory.
