Reading for Writing

*Always read with a pen in your hand!

 

First:  Read entire piece once without marking it.

·       When you are finished, put the overall main idea underneath the title; use your own words.

 

Second:  Read the piece again, this time to mark it.

 

Glossing:  Write the main point of the ¶ in the margin.

(Helps with summarizing)

 

Underlining/Highlighting:  Identify the supporting details for the main idea.

(Helps with summarizing)

 

Annotating:  Record your own reactions in the margins.

·       Ask questions

·       Write your opinions re: the content

·       Relate the content to other ideas

·       Add ideas

(Helps with writing a *response)

 

*Response: 

1.   Agree or Disagree 

2.   Overlooked 

3.   Solution 

4.   Analysis

5.   Related Idea
