read with a pen in your hand!
First:  Read entire
piece once without marking it.

When you are
finished, put the overall main idea underneath the title; use your own words.
Second:  Read the piece
again, this time to mark it.
Glossing:  Write the main
point of the ¶ in the margin.

Underlining/Highlighting:  Identify the supporting
details for the main idea.

Annotating:  Record your
own reactions in the margins.
